Crisis24 Evacuation Insurance Coverage

Crisis24 is U-M’s political and natural disaster evacuation assistance provider that is contracted through the GeoBlue Travel Abroad Health Insurance. To receive this coverage, travelers must have the U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance (GeoBlue) plan for the duration of their travel, Register their Travel, and meet other conditions outlined below for higher risk locations. All evacuation decisions are made in coordination between the U-M Global Engagement Team and GeoBlue. 

Crisis24 designates some locations as higher risk and requires travelers to complete the Crisis24 Predeparture Disclosure Request form in order to be eligible for political and natural disaster evacuation coverage.

The following locations require Crisis24 pre-approval before departure:

  • Undergraduate students are prohibited from traveling to a U-M Travel Restriction destination, including all Crisis24 pre-approval locations, for University of Michigan Related Travel (UMRT).
  • For Graduate students on U-M Related Travel, your completed Individual Safety Plan will serve as your Crisis24 Pre-departure Disclosure Request Form. See your destination’s Country Risk Rating page for details.
    • Graduate students must have Crisis24 approval before arriving at designated higher risk locations in order to be eligible for their political and natural disaster evacuation insurance.
    • Graduate students who do not complete this process are taking the risk of not having Crisis24 political and natural disaster evacuation coverage in locations that are considered higher risk by Crisis24. U-M relies on Crisis24 to facilitate all U-M evacuations, and U-M has limited to no ability to facilitate evacuations for travelers without Crisis24 insurance coverage.
    • Submit your Individual Safety Plan at least six weeks before departure since the Crisis24 review can take up to three weeks. Travelers are encouraged to verify Crisis24 evacuation capability for Crisis24 higher risk destinations before finalizing travel plans.

Faculty & Staff on University of Michigan Related Travel (UMRT) going to any of these locations must follow these steps:

  1. Register travel in the U-M Travel Registry
  2. Complete the Crisis24 Pre-departure Disclosure Request Form
  3. Send the completed form to Crisis24.Review@umich.edu. Crisis24 will notify the traveler whether the request is “approved” or “denied.”
    • Faculty & Staff must have Crisis24 approval before arriving at designated higher-risk locations in order to be eligible for their political and natural disaster evacuation insurance.
    • Faculty & Staff who do not complete this process are taking the risk of not having Crisis24 political and natural disaster evacuation coverage in locations that are considered higher risk by Crisis24. U-M relies on Crisis24 to facilitate all U-M evacuations, and U-M has limited to no ability to facilitate evacuations for travelers without Crisis24 insurance coverage.

Crisis24 Horizon

Crisis24 Horizon is a one-stop shop for location-based travel risk management. All U-M faculty, staff, and students who are planning to go abroad, are currently abroad, or provide support for international experiences may register to have access.  Key benefits from the platform include:

  • Real-time alerts of threats and disruptions
  • Risk ratings and location Intelligence of safety & security issues in countries and cities worldwide
  • Advice sheets to mitigate a range of safety and security issues

U-M users can access Crisis24 Horizon via web browser or by downloading the Crisis24 mobile app. To access the platform, U-M users must first register online by following these registration instructions below.

  • Desktop:
    Go to crisis24horizon.com/UMich
  • Mobile App:
    Download from your app store or search for Crisis24 Horizon Mobile.
  • Logging In:
    1. Open the mobile or web app, enter your organization email address, and tap Create Account.
    2. Enter the additional personal details requested and tap Next.
    3. Open the Welcome email and click to activate your account.
    4. Create your password and then Sign-In to access Horizon.
  • Notification Preferences:
    • Desktop: Go to Preferences, located under your name on the top-right, and set up your preferred notifications.
    • Mobile: Follow the prompts to enable Push Notifications and Location Services to receive alert notifications based on your current location.

Crisis24 Horizon houses location briefs for over 200+ countries, 800+ provinces, and 400+ cities. U-M students, faculty, and staff planning to travel to these destinations are strongly encouraged to review these briefs as part of their travel preparation process. Crisis24 Horizon provides real-time alerts of significant threats and disruptions worldwide. Each alert provides:

  • Severity of the incident
  • Affected areas
  • Time frame
  • Summary
  • Background
  • Advice to traveler

U-M users can set alert notification preferences by defining severity levels, categories, and locations to be included in email alerts or push notifications. Review the adding alert notification preferences guide for setting up your alerts.

Crisis24 Horizon provides Daily Intelligence Briefings which are daily reports that consolidate all of the active alerts within the last 24 hours and deliver them directly to the user’s email. U-M users can decide specifics related to the report, such as:

  • When to receive the report
  • Define severity levels to include
  • Select which categories to include
  • Choose locations of the alerts
