Voting in U.S. Elections while outside the United States

Step 1

Find out if there are elections in your voting area scheduled when you’ll be out of the country. Contact your local election official (see step #3) or consult ballotpedia.

Step 2

Fill out the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Use your international address once you arrive.

Step 3

Email the FPCA application to your local clerk.

Clerks in Michigan can be found here:  mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index.

Election officials outside of Michigan can be found here: usvotefoundation.org/election-offices.

After receiving your application, they will be able to send you a ballot via mail, fax, or email. EMAIL is easiest for most voters.

Step 4

Return your completed ballot by mail, fax, or email. Again, email is the fastest and easiest for most voters.

Questions?

If you have any questions or difficulties, reach out to your local clerk or to voterregquestions@umich.edu.
