Essential Preparation Steps for Healthy and Safe International Travel

November 30, 2023

Dear U-M Community Members,

As the end of fall term approaches, many of you may be planning to travel internationally. To prepare for unexpected health, safety, or security situations, we encourage all U-M students and current faculty and staff traveling abroad to register their travel and enroll in travel abroad health insurance. Follow the steps below to ensure you have the resources and support you need.

Register your international travel with U-M:

  • Travel registration takes just minutes and allows U-M to quickly and accurately locate and assist U-M travelers abroad in the event of a health, safety, or security crisis.
  • Travel registration is required for faculty, staff, and students on U-M Related Travel and is optional for those traveling for personal reasons.

Ensure you are covered by GeoBlue, U-M’s Travel Abroad Health Insurance:

     GeoBlue for Personal Travel

     GeoBlue for U-M Related Travel

Review health and wellbeing resources offered through Global Michigan, CAPS (including Uwill virtual counseling services), and GeoBlue.

Schedule a travel health consultation at UHS if relevant for your travel.

Download the General Emergency Protocols document, which outlines steps and resources for U-M travelers abroad in need of emergency support from the university.

We wish you a safe and healthy journey wherever your travels may take you.

Sincerely,

Valeria Bertacco, Vice Provost for Engaged Learning

Patrick Morgan, Chief International Travel Safety Office, Office of the Provost
