Personal Leisure Travel

Faculty, staff, and students who are traveling abroad for personal reasons that is not U-M Related Travel (UMRT) still have access to U-M resources and emergency support. To access these optional resources, follow the steps below.

Optional Resources

Faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad but are not on U-M Related Travel (UMRT) must complete the following optional steps to access U-M resources and be eligible for support.

Step 1:

Determine if you are on U-M Related Travel

First, determine if your travel counts as U-M Related Travel (UMRT). If so, follow the steps outlined on the U-M requirements pages for faculty, staff, and students on UMRT. If your travel is not UMRT, it is considered personal travel and follow the steps below to access optional resources.

What is U-M Related Travel

Step 2:

Register Your Travel

Register your leisure travel with U-M for the duration of travel. This is not mandatory and is an optional resource.

Register Your Travel

Step 3

Obtain U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance

Faculty, staff, and students have the option to purchase U-M Personal/Leisure Travel Abroad Health Insurance (GeoBlue/BCBS Global) for the duration of travel. This insurance can also be purchased for traveling spouses, domestic partners, and dependents under the age of 26.

The insurance includes political and natural disaster insurance that is managed by U-M’s evacuation assistance provider Crisis24. Travelers who may want U-M support for non-UM Related Travel must purchase the GeoBlue (BCBS Global) travel abroad health and evacuation insurance before departure. Without the GeoBlue (BCBS Global) insurance, U-M has no ability to provide emergency evacuation assistance with the exception of providing guidance and information.

Details of the GeoBlue (BCBS Global) insurance can be found on the UHC Travel Abroad Health Insurance page.
