Step 3:

Steps for Faculty and Staff Traveling to a Crisis24 higher risk location

  1. Complete the Crisis24 Predeparture Disclosure Request form if you are traveling to any of the locations below.  Faculty and staff who do not complete this process before departure will not have Crisis24 political and natural disaster evacuation coverage in these locations.
  2. Crisis24 requires pre-approval for the following locations: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia (Tigray region only), Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria (Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, and northern Adamawa states only), North Korea, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen.
    1. Send the completed form to Crisis24.Review@umich.edu before departure. Crisis24 will notify the traveler whether the request is approved or denied. Travel that is not approved before departure by the assistance provider will not be eligible for political evacuation or natural disaster evacuation coverage.

Additional Requirements for Faculty & Staff Leading Students Abroad

Faculty and staff leading students abroad are required to:

Step 1:

Ensure Group Members Have Registered Their Travel

  • For groups where students applied for the experience through M-Compass, the program application in M-Compass acts as the travel registration, and no further action is needed.
  • For groups where students did not apply for the experience through M-Compass, the group leader or the U-M units sponsoring travel will need to submit a Student Group Travel Request Form, which is located on the Global Michigan Register Travel page. The Global Engagement Team will then register the group into M-Compass on your behalf. Please note that travel registration does not imply travel approval; group leaders must obtain School/College/Unit travel approval. Search for your unit on the Education Abroad Office page.

For questions about travel registration, please contact global.engagement@umich.edu

Register Your Travel

Step 2:

Obtain U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance

The group leader(s) and all participants (U-M students and non-UM affiliates*) are required to be enrolled in U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance (GeoBlue) for the duration of travel.

  • Current (regular) U-M faculty and staff are automatically covered by the GeoBlue Business Traveler Plan.
  • U-M students can either self-enroll into the GeoBlue Study Abroad Plan or the group leader(s) / unit can enroll the participants via a GeoBlue group roster. Please contact campusinsurance@umich.edu to receive GeoBlue administrator access for submitting a group roster.
  • Non-UM affiliates are individuals not enrolled as U-M students but who participate in a U-M Managed Program or an experience that is U-M Organized. These individuals are considered “Students” and must be enrolled into the GeoBlue Study Abroad Plan on their behalf by a GeoBlue administrator.

Step 3:

Review Country Risk Rating and Submit a Group Safety Plan (if applicable)

Faculty and staff taking students abroad to a higher-risk destination (Travel Health Medium Risk, Travel Health High Risk, Travel Warning, or Travel Restriction) need to ensure that group leaders, or the unit sponsoring travel, complete a Group Safety Plan on the student participants’ behalf at least 4 weeks prior to departure.

See the U-M Travel Health Plan and Safety Plan Process Flowchart provides details.
