First-Generation Education Abroad Scholarship

First-Generation Education Abroad Scholarship

The Global Engagement First-Generation Education Abroad Scholarship Program is designed to support and empower first-generation college students as they pursue transformative international learning experiences. Understanding that first-gen students often face unique financial and informational barriers to studying abroad, this program aims to reduce those challenges and increase access to global opportunities.

Eligible students receive a $3,000 scholarship to participate in an approved U-M study abroad program. This funding helps offset the cost of international travel and programming, opening doors to academic, personal, and professional development through global engagement.

Launched in Academic Year 2023–2024, the program awarded ten scholarships from a competitive pool of over 100 applicants. Due to the strong demand and positive impact of the program’s inaugural year, it has expanded significantly in 2024–2025 to support up to 100 students.

Eligibility:

The Global Engagement First-Generation Education Abroad Scholarship is open to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate student enrolled at the U-M Ann Arbor campus (open to both domestic and international students)

  • Identify as a first-generation college student, as defined by the U-M’s First-Generation Initiative (firstgen.umich.edu)

  • Intend to study abroad during a specific semester (winter or spring/summer), as the scholarship is awarded for a designated term
