Student Perspective: Katrina in Beijing

Katrina Chan
College of Literature, Science and the Arts

“Thanks to my study abroad experience, I was able to further my language skills in an immersive environment and get to understand international perspectives. During my time in China, I was able to have meaningful conversations with locals, who I was surprised to find out were just as curious about the US as I was about China. If it weren’t for my time there, I would’ve never been able to share vibrant conversations about the two different cultures or share flavorful dinners with my friends. I would highly recommend study abroad to students who want to gain a global perspective and make unforgettable memories! I would advise future study abroad students to make the most of every opportunity, and to not be afraid of going solo.

As a first-generation student, I believe my study abroad journey was influenced by my sense of curiosity. As someone who is always asking questions, I found myself asking language partners and locals about their own experiences with their cultures. The First-Gen Education Abroad Scholarship was able to reduce the financial stress study abroad can incur on students, such as myself. With its use, I was able to focus on my studies, meet new people, and immerse myself in more experiences.”
