Stay Local is an initiative encouraging students participating in education abroad programs to explore and engage with their host city and region rather than traveling long distances during their semester abroad. By focusing on local experiences, students can reduce the carbon footprint associated with travel while still enriching their cultural, academic, and personal growth. The program includes resources, activities, and a pledge, called the Stay Local Weekend, that allows students to commit to making sustainable travel choices. Through Stay Local, the University of Michigan promotes responsible global learning, helping students enjoy meaningful experiences abroad while supporting environmental sustainability.
