Student Perspective: Melanie in Rome

“As a first-generation college student, I wanted a holistic undergraduate experience and the chance to pursue opportunities that would push me outside my comfort zone. Studying a subject in its historical location was something I greatly valued, which is why I chose my program. I was surprised by the emphasis on cultural exposure—though there was a classroom component, we often had guided excursions to historical sites that brought our lessons to life. One core memory for me was our class visit to Monte Cassino, a World War II battle site with breathtaking views.

This experience taught me not to fear the unknown. Before this trip, I had never traveled outside of North America and thought studying abroad might be unattainable due to financial barriers. With research and guidance, I found the resources that made it possible, and I came back more independent and willing to take initiative.

Being a first-generation student shaped my journey by helping me overcome self-doubt and financial worries. The First-Gen Education Abroad Scholarship had a profound impact on my ability to go—it eased financial stress and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, free from constant worry, and truly enjoy every moment.”
