Student Perspective: Madison in Cape Town

Madison McDonald
LSA

“Studying abroad in South Africa is a unique opportunity to uncover answers to my questions as I bridge the classroom to the global stage, immersing myself in cultural perspectives through hands-on exploration. Learning from underrepresented populations directly impacted by inconsistent medical care, while comparing the approaches to treatment and health policy to my own experience, will provide me with a balanced and newfound understanding that the classroom cannot match.

My experience studying South Africa’s healthcare system allowed me to deepen my understanding of the interrelationship between economic inequality, disease burden, and health outcomes. Through hands-on learning in local NGOs and clinical settings, I examined the importance of improving access to quality neurological care for socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

As a future health professional, being part of South Africa’s geographically diverse community equipped me with newfound knowledge to better the world around me.”

Advice from Madison: “Seize every opportunity to learn something new, push yourself out of your comfort zone, and challenge yourself to reach your full potential!”
