Student Perspective: Bushra in Accra

“I was motivated to study abroad because of my interest in global health and my desire to explore healthcare in other countries. My pre-med peers also encouraged me to expand my resume by gaining international experience. What surprised me most was the immense kindness of the Ghanaian people. A core memory from the trip was our last night together—we went out for dinner and then to a karaoke bar, which was the perfect way to bond, reflect, and celebrate the end of our program.

This experience taught me that people are very similar everywhere, though their circumstances shape their behavior and culture. I learned about healthcare systems in Ghana and how people’s experiences and stories influence their practices today. Personally, I grew more mature, independent, and confident in handling unforeseen challenges.

As a first-generation student, I wanted to make my family proud. This was my first time being away for so long and in such a new environment, which made the journey even more meaningful. The First-Gen Education Abroad Scholarship eased the financial stress that initially made me question whether studying abroad was even possible. It lifted that burden and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience.”
