Friday, May 9th from 9:00am-5:00pm. In-person (Location: LSA Multi-purpose Room)
The Global Engagement Team is collaborating with the Well-Being at LSA Initiative to host the Mental Health First Aid Higher Education Program! This program is designed to enhance the ability, skills, and comfort of faculty and staff members in supporting community members facing mental health challenges, including students who participate in education abroad experiences.
Why Mental Health First Aid?
Higher education poses unique mental health challenges, such as academic stress, financial pressures, and social isolation. This early intervention course uses community-specific scenarios, activities, and videos to teach the skills needed to recognize and respond to mental health and substance use signs and symptoms. You’ll learn how to provide initial support until professional help is available.
This program is NOT intended to make participants an expert or clinical professional (e.g., therapists, psychologists). Instead, it is tailored for everyday people dealing with everyday scenarios, including education abroad-focused scenarios.
This engaging program helps decrease stigma, address tough challenges, and ensure that individuals on your campus are prepared to provide support and better cope with mental health and substance use challenges. By participating in the Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education course, you can demonstrate your commitment to creating a safe and supportive campus environment. The course equips you with the knowledge to assist a student, friend, or colleague experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.
