“On a trip to Bahia, a friend and I wandered into an indigenous community during a magical sunset. The light was absolutely golden. We were greeted by a 10-year-old self-proclaimed tour guide. I gave him $20 for his time, with which he said he would buy a cell phone. The community is completely disconnected from larger society, but the influence still seems to creep in.”
