This photo was taken by Patricia DeLacey and was selected as a winner for the International Institute’s ‘The World is a Classroom’ competition. She said, “Measuring the chest patch temperature of an adult, male gelada monkey with an infrared thermometer. Gelada monkeys, nicknamed the ‘bleeding heart monkey,’ have a flame red patch of skin on their chest. For males, changes in chest patch color appear to be rank-based, with dominant males exhibiting the brightest chest patches compared to subordinate males. I’m assessing the thermoregulatory cost associated with maintaining a bright chest patch as part of her dissertation research.”
