All in a hard day’s work
Kawa Ijen,
Indonesia
A Javanese miner shows me the fruits of his labors: fresh sulfur. After hiking three hours into the Kawa Ijen Volcano, this miner collects 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of sulfur, which he will then carry three hours back out of the crater. The two trips he makes daily amidst the deadly sulfur fumes make this one of the world’s most dangerous jobs.
