In continued partnership with Sarah Elgin of U-M Recreation Sports, the Global Engagement Team is pleased to offer another round of the Wilderness and Remote First Aid certification workshop (WRFA) for eligible faculty, staff, and students at no cost to you.

The two-day training is scheduled for Friday 4/4 and Saturday 4/5 from 9am-6pm at the U-M Adventure Leadership Center. The deadline to register is 9am on March 21. Please review additional eligibility, registration, and course details below and share this opportunity with any colleagues or students who may be interested and eligible.

WRFA Training Eligibility

Faculty, staff, and students are eligible for this opportunity if they a) lead groups of students on U-M Related Travel abroad and/or b) conduct work in remote field sites abroad. Abroad here means outside the 50 states and Washington DC, and remote field work meets any of the following criteria:

  • It is an hour’s travel time or more from emergency medical facilities.

  • It has limited or no cellular service or communications infrastructure.

  • It involves difficult access/exit (e.g., caves, mountainous terrain, etc.).

Attendees must be able to submit proof of holding a valid adult CPR/AED/First Aid certification. If you are not currently certified, you may still be able to register for our CPR/AED/First Aid training on Wednesday March 19 from 10am-12pm.

WRFA Registration Details

Attendees must submit proof of a valid CPR/AED/First Aid certification to Sarah Elgin (selgin@umich.edu) before being admitted to the training roster. We will send detailed instructions to those who complete the course registration form and are admitted.

NOTE: Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so register using your U-M email as soon as possible. Registration is limited to 16 and others will be waitlisted. We will send detailed instructions to those who are admitted. We reserve the right to cancel the training if the enrollment minimum of 10 is not met.

WRFA Course Details

This WRFA training is a two-day workshop currently scheduled for Friday April 4 and Saturday April 5 from 9am-6pm at the U-M Adventure Leadership Center. Attendees must be able to arrange their own transportation to the training site, though we are happy to connect participants for carpooling purposes. To receive WRFA certification, attendees must:

  1. Attend all class sessions

  2. Participate in all skill sessions and activities

  1. Demonstrate competency in all observable skills

  2. Complete the scenarios

  3. Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent

WFRA provides individuals a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services (EMS) response. This includes wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes. See this WFRA Fact Sheet for more details.
