University-Related Travel

University-related travel may include, but is not limited to, study, research, internships, service, conferences, presentations, teaching, performances, or athletic competitions.

University Travel Registry

All students traveling abroad for University-related purposes must register their international travel in the University Travel Registry before the expected departure date. As changes occur, students should update the University Travel Registry throughout the duration of the trip, including additional countries added during travel.

University Travel Abroad Health Insurance

All students traveling abroad for any University-related purpose are required to have travel abroad health insurance coverage from the University’s authorized vendor.

The University’s authorized travel abroad health insurance must be purchased for/by students traveling internationally regardless of whether the student traveler has other related coverage.

University Travel Warning Destinations (PDF)

Travel is unadvisable due to a significant level of health, safety or security risks.

Undergraduate and graduate/professional students requesting to travel for a University-related purpose to a University Travel Warning destination must:

  • Complete the Safety Plan for Individual Travel (.docx)
  • Inform the U-M trip sponsor, advisor or contact that the proposed location is under a University Travel Warning and consult with them about the purpose of the proposed travel.
  • The student must then request an exception to travel by submitting their Safety Plan to the International Travel Oversight Committee (ITOC) for review and approval related to the identified health and safety risks: itoc-travel@umich.edu. Requests must be submitted no later than 3 weeks prior to departure.

Upon ITOC approval, students are required to:

  1. Register in the University Travel Registry
  2. Obtain University Travel Abroad Health Insurance
  3. Submit a signed University Travel Warning Destination Liability Waiver (PDF) to itoc-travel@umich.edu

Travel authorization may be revoked if these steps are not completed before departure.

ITOC Review Committee Process
Students must submit a request for an exception to travel no later than (3) weeks prior to departure to allow sufficient time for review. It is to your benefit to submit your request well in advance of anticipated travel. The ITOC review committee evaluates requests on a case-by-case basis and may contact the student for additional information. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Submission of a request for an exception to travel to a University Travel Warning or Restriction destination does not guarantee travel approval. ITOC recommends students refrain from making final travel arrangements until ITOC has reviewed and approved the proposed travel. ITOC will notify the student of the approval status via Email, with a copy to the U-M Advisor, Sponsor or Department Contact included on the form.

Questions about the process may be directed to itoc-travel@umich.edu or call 734-763-0395.
